I am leaving South Africa. I have lived here for 35 years, and I shall leave with anguish. My home and my friends are here, but I am terrified.

I know I shall be in trouble for saying so, because I am the widow of Alan Paton. Fifty years ago he wrote Cry, The Beloved Country. He was an unknown schoolmaster and it was his first book, but it became a bestseller overnight. It was eventually translated into more than 20 languages and became a set book in schools all over the world. It has sold more than 15 million copies and still sells 100,000 copies a year.

As a result of the startling success of this book, my husband became famous for his impassioned speeches and writings, which brought to the notice of the world the suffering of the black man under Apartheid.

He campaigned for Nelson Mandela's release from prison and he worked all his life for black majority rule. He was incredibly hopeful about the new South Africa that would follow the end of Apartheid, but he died in 1988, aged 85. I was so sorry he did not witness the euphoria and love at the time of the election in 1994. But I am glad he is not alive now. He would have been so distressed to see what has happened to his beloved country.

I love this country with a passion, but I cannot live here any more. I can no longer live slung about with panic buttons and gear locks. I am tired of driving with my car windows closed and the doors locked, tired of being afraid of stopping at red lights. I am tired of being constantly on the alert, having that sudden frisson of fear at the sight of a shadow by the gate, of a group of youths approaching - although nine times out of 10 they are innocent of harmful intent. Such is the suspicion that dogs us all.

Among my friends and the friends of my friends, I know of nine people who have been murdered in the past four years. An old friend, an elderly lady, was raped and murdered by someone who broke into her home for no reason at all; another was shot at a garage.

We have a saying, "Don't fire the gardener", because of the belief that it is so often an inside job - the gardener who comes back and does you in.

All this may sound like paranoia, but it is not without reason. I have been hijacked, mugged and terrorised. A few years ago my car was taken from me at gunpoint. I was forced into the passenger seat. I sat there frozen. But just as one man jumped into the back and the other fumbled with the starter I opened the door and ran away. To this day I do not know how I did this. But I got away, still clutching my handbag.

On May 1 this year I was mugged in my home at three in the afternoon. I used to live in a community of big houses with big grounds in the countryside. It's still beautiful and green, but the big houses have been knocked down and people have moved into fenced complexes like the one in which I now live. Mine is in the suburbs of Durban, but they're springing up everywhere.

That afternoon I came home and omitted to close the security door. I went upstairs to lie down. After a while I thought I'd heard a noise, perhaps a bird or something. Without a qualm I got up and went to the landing; outside was a man. I screamed and two other men appeared. I was seized by the throat and almost throttled; I could feel myself losing consciousness. My mouth was bound with Sellotape and I was threatened with my own knife (Girl Guide issue from long ago) and told: "If you make a sound, you die." My hands were tied tightly behind my back and I was thrown into the guest room and the door was shut. They took all the electronic equipment they could find, except the computer. They also, of course, took the car.

A few weeks later my new car was locked up in my fenced carport when I was woken by its alarm in the early hours of the morning. The thieves had removed the radio, having cut through the padlocks in order to bypass the electric control on the gates.

The last straw came a few weeks ago, shortly before my 71st birthday. I returned home in the middle of the afternoon and walked into my sitting room. Outside the window two men were breaking in. I retreated to the hall and pressed the panic alarm. This time I had shut the front door on entering. By now I had become more cautious. Yet one of the men ran around the house, jumped over the fence and tried to batter down the front door. Meanwhile, his accomplice was breaking my sitting- room window with a hammer. This took place while the sirens were shrieking, which was the frightening part. They kept coming, in broad daylight, while the alarm was going. They knew that there had to be a time lag of a few minutes before help arrived - enough time to dash off with the television and video recorder. In fact, the front-door assailant was caught and taken off to the cells.

Recently I telephoned to ask the magistrate when I would be called as a witness. She told me she had let him off for lack of evidence. She said that banging on my door was not an offence, and how could I prove that his intent was hostile?

I have been careless in the past - razor wire and electric gates give one a feeling of security. Or at least, they did. But I am careless no longer.

No fence - be it electric or not - no wall, no razor wire is really a deterrent to the determined intruder. Now my alarm is on all the time and my panic button hung round my neck. While some people say I have been unlucky, others say: "You are lucky not to have been raped or murdered." What kind of a society is this where one is considered "lucky" not to have been raped or murdered - yet?

A character in Cry, The Beloved Country says: "I have one great fear in my heart, that one day when they are turned to loving they will find we are turned to hating." And so it has come to pass. There is now more racial tension in this country than I have ever known.

But it is not just about black-on-white crime. It is about general lawlessness. Black people suffer more than the whites. They do not have access to private security firms, and there are no police stations near them in the townships and rural areas. They are the victims of most of the hijackings, rapes and murders. They cannot run away like the whites, who are streaming out of this country in their thousands.

President Mandela has referred to us who leave as "cowards" and says the country can do without us. So be it. But it takes a great deal of courage to uproot and start again. We are leaving because crime is rampaging through the land. The evils that beset this country now are blamed on the legacy of Apartheid. One of the worst legacies of that time is that of the Bantu Education Act, which deliberately gave black people an inferior education.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that criminals know that their chances of being caught are negligible; and if they are caught they will be free almost at once. So what is the answer? The government needs to get its priorities right. We need a powerful, well-trained and well-equipped police force.

Recently there was a robbery at a shopping centre in the afternoon. A call to the police station elicited the reply: "We have no transport." "Just walk then," said the caller; the police station is about a two-minute sprint from the shop in question. "We have no transport," came the reply again. Nobody arrived.

There is a quote from my husband's book: "Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."

What has changed in half a century? A lot of people who were convinced that everything would be all right are disillusioned, though they don't want to admit it.

The government has many excellent schemes for improving the lot of the black man, who has been disadvantaged for so long. A great deal of money is spent in this direction. However, nothing can succeed while people live in such fear. Last week, about 10km from my home, an old couple were taken out and murdered in the garden. The wife had only one leg and was in a wheelchair. Yet they were stabbed and strangled - for very little money. They were the second old couple to be killed last week. It goes on and on, all the time; we have become a killing society.

As I prepare to return to England, a young man asked me the other day, in all innocence, if things were more peaceful there. "You see," he said, "I know of no other way of life than this. I cannot imagine anything different." What a tragic statement on the beloved country today.

"Because the white man has power, we too want power," says Msimangu. "But when a black man gets power, when he gets money, he is a great man if he is not corrupted. I have seen it often. He seeks power and money to put right what is wrong, and when he gets them, why, he enjoys the power and the money. Now he can gratify his lusts, now he can arrange ways to get white man's liquor. I see only one hope for our country, and that is when white men and black men, desiring neither power nor money, but desiring only the good of their country, come together to work for it.

I have one great fear in my heart, that one day when they are turned to loving, they will find we are turned to hating.

And that was written in 1998! It has gotten much worse since with the genocide against people of white color escalating, especially against the Boer farmers (who feed the nation).

The well-meaning or useful idiots among people of white color in South Africa, who ignorantly thought the end of Apartheid would somehow usher in something better, had to shamefully ignore the cries of those who vainly attempted to wake the liberals from their dangerous slumber. South Africa is not better and it continues to deteriorate in every way for every color and creed.

Here's a true story of racism that the liberal media doesn't want you to know:

Race is a touchy subject in America. In fact it's an obsession. When I ended up with this picture (click here) via an e-mail chat group, I was skeptical. After all, I live in Bristol Virginia/Tennessee only 90 miles from Knoxville. This horror story never made it into the local press that I know of. We were drowned out by Anna Nicole Smith banter. If it had been reported, it was certain we would never know the race of the felons, or that at least two of the four are released felons.

But we certainly knew the race of the Duke Lacrosse Players as their names and pictures were splattered all over the media for months. Because my website often tracks and publishes many issues on Bristol Virginia/Tennessee, I did see a growing pattern similar to Knoxville. Only if we see a picture of the criminal (or if they have a Spanish name) do we know their race. Unless it perpetrator is white, the race is never mentioned. Let's look at some facts.

April 18, 2006 New York Times to quote,

The woman, a 27-year-old single mother of two and a student at a nearby university, is black. She was hired to perform as an exotic dancer at an off-campus party held March 13 by members of the team. She said she was attacked by three white players...Forty-six team members submitted DNA samples to the police on March 23 under a court order. Results of those DNA tests were released April 9 by defense lawyers, who said the results failed to link any of the players to the woman. The 47th player, who is black, was not required to submit a sample because the woman said the attackers were white...

Channon Christian and Chris Newsom

In about every publication I googled (with over 1 million hits for "duke lacrosse players") race was constantly brought up, the stripper's name/picture withheld while the players names/photos were everywhere. (I still don't know her name or what she looks like.) As for that lone black player on the team in an interview on ABC News Oct. 31, 2006:

...his three white teammates who have been accused of sexually assaulting a black woman had been stereotyped by class and skin color..."

This case has cost their families over $3 million.

Even on so-called conservative Fox News (March 23rd, 2007) to quote, "The remaining charges against three Duke University lacrosse players originally indicted for rape may be dropped sometime within the next few days..." still refused to name this discredited "stripper" and still refers to her as a "student." Again they emphasize black and white, along with the pictures of the rail-roaded, white lacrosse players.

Update April 12, 2007. I finally saw her picture and got her name from FOX as they were talking to Greta Van Susteren, who made all kinds of excuses to defend her. She said she was too "uneducated" and "unsophisticated" to understand what was going on. The women whom the New York Times admitted works for an escort service, I hope isn't typical of the all black college she claims to attend.

But what the New York Times never said even now, the New York Post did on April 12, 2007:

Her name is Crystal Gail Mangum, and she should not escape the world's scorn because she is poor, or because she is black, or because her life circumstances led her to work as a "stripper." Her name is Crystal Gail Mangum, and she does not deserve to lick the underside of the shoes of hardworking and honest people of color and modest means who somehow manage to get through life without attempting to destroy and defile the lives of others. At his press conference yesterday, Attorney General Roy Cooper said something odd about the liar Crystal Gail Mangum. He said she would face no charges for her false accusation.

Another bogger had this to say, "Is race a factor?" in regards to the Knoxville horror:

Still others see a more sinister hand at work. The suspects who have been apprehended for the horrific crime against those two young people are black; the victims were white. Many seem to think that the race of the alleged perpetrators is the issue. Had the perpetrators been white, and the victims black, they say, the case would be all over the television and newspapers. Many cite the much-publicized dragging death of James Byrd, Jr. as an example. Also troubling, according to some, is the contrast between the national media coverage of the alleged Duke rape case and this one. Visitors to the blogs I viewed also cited similarities between this case and the Wichita Massacre, a black-on-white rape/torture/murder in 2000, and other little-known cases as proof of a recent history of "blacking out" certain news stories.

When blacks commit outrages against whites, media executives not only downplay black misbehavior but believe they must protect whites from "negative stereotypes" about blacks. If they must report such crimes, they are likely to link them to editorials calling for tolerance, and pointing out that the criminals were individuals, not a race. When whites commit outrages against blacks there are no such cautions; white society at large is to blame...The Carr brothers' crimes were treated to a virtual media blackout. The Chicago Tribune and the Washington Times appear to be the only major non-Kansas dailies ever to mention the story. Their articles briefly described the facts of the case, and then focused on Internet discussions among whites who thought the Carr brothers were hate criminals. The Associated Press ran stories on the crimes, but they do not appear to have been picked up outside of Kansas. Within the state, the media dutifully promoted Mrs. Foulston's categorization of the crimes as "random." The networks, of course, were silent. Were it not for the Internet, the Wichita story would have disappeared...

The same goes for this Knoxville story as well. This comment from www.vdare.com from: A Reader In Knoxville, Tennessee:

Here we go again, the depths of depravity are pushed deeper by black hooligans in sleepy Knoxville, TN. First they were just going to carjack, then they decided to abduct and take the couple back to the criminal's house. So they tied them up, beat the boyfriend in front of his girl, shoot him, pour gasoline on him and lit him on fire. They disposed of his body near some railroad tracks. Next, it is her turn as they rape and sodomize her for several days, maybe as many as four black men took part! They pour drain cleaner into her throat to clean up the evidence, wrap her in plastic and throw her into their garbage can outside their house. Except that they didn't know she was alive! She later died from the cold. No mention of the perpetrator's or victim's ancestry is mentioned. Although in Knoxville, their faces are all on the news channels.

February 11, 2007 "(AP) Judge orders federal charges dropped in carjacking, slaying"

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Federal charges have been dropped against three suspects in the fatal carjacking of a young Knoxville couple so prosecutors can concentrate on more serious state counts against them. Prosecutors filed a request to dismiss federal carjacking charges against brothers Lemaricus Davidson, 25, and Letalvis Cobbins, 24, and an accessory charge against George Thomas, 24. Those charges were the first filed against the suspects after their capture in Knoxville and Lebanon, Ky. All three since have been named in a 46-count Knox County indictment charging them with premeditated murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape and...theft in the January deaths of Channon Christian, 21, and her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, 23. The murder counts can carry the death penalty on conviction.

U.S. District Judge Tom Varlan approved on Friday a request by the U.S. Attorney's Office to drop the carjacking charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Jennings said at a hearing Thursday before U.S. District Magistrate Judge Bruce Guyton that authorities intended to seek dismissal of federal charges because they believe the suspects should stand trial on the more serious first-degree murder charges. A federal accessory to carjacking charge will remain against Eric Boyd, 34, since he is notcharged in the Knox County indictment. Boyd, who faces trial in federal court in July, could receive up to 15 years if convicted. A fifth suspect, Vanessa Coleman, 18, was named in 40 of the 46 state counts, which include legal variations on some of the same crimes. Coleman, previously identified in court records as a witness, was Cobbins' girlfriend.

There's no mention of any civil rights violations. Again, no mention of race. An angry blogger had this to say: Do you know who James Byrd is? The National media were all over that story, 3 White guys kill a Black man by dragging him from behind a pick up truck. White on Black crime sells. Where was the National media when 4 Black men ( if that is what you want to call them) car-jacked the car Channon & Chris were driving in. But instead of just stealing the car it was fun time in the hood for these subhumans. They took the two to a home and raped and beat both of them. Now ladies think about this; you are held down by a large Black man and he penetrates you and beats you, but not just 1 Black man 4 Black men over a period of 2 days. You are their sex slave and punching bag. Also they force you to drink household cleaners to help hide their DNA. Now how do you think their DNA got into your belly? They force you watch as your boyfriend is gang raped, prison style. Then they shoot him, some say they cut off his male member then set him on fire. Again where is the National media in all this? They are silent when perpetrators are Black and the victims are White. If 4 White men would have done this to a Black man and his girlfriend, wow the National media would have a field day with this. Jessie and Al would have marches and then everyone would say racism played a role.

Jessie and Al have done nothing but raise hell over some minor remarks of Don Imus, a boring talk radio host that said some bad things about the Rutgers ladies basketball team. That cost him his job. That has been in the news and has drowned-out the fact the charges of rape against three white men by a prostitute have been dropped. The end result of this is a growing backlash against all black people because many feel there's a double standard.

News reports (some below) confirm this person's comments. As I monitored the local news in my area where they do often publish pictures, one fact stands out; while non-whites make up about 5% of the region's population, they account for 40% of the crime. This figure was given to me by local police. Of concern as well in the last five years is the explosion of Hispanic crime including in 2007 two attempted child abductions, drug running and gang style shootings, child rape, and kidnapping. In fact one local Hispanic has been sentenced to death for murdering his cell mate. The region is being flooded with illegal aliens as employers refusing to pay a living wage import them by the bus load. See Illegal Aliens in East Tennessee.

In another case, a local black thug (repeat offender) gunned down (alleged) a white Bristol, Tennessee police officer. No mention of the fact he was black. While race may not have been a motivation here, it's one indication of the high levels of crime among non-whites.

Below are samples of recent crime, much of it centered in the mostly black public housing. The drug busts are across the region. Race is never mentioned in any of them.

In conclusion, the liberal press has a double standard, if not outright denial that race is a factor in crime. If one doesn't believe me, watch the popular program COPS! and notice the color of most of the criminals. No doubt I'll be called a racist for bring this kind of thing up. The truth is not racism! To ignore the truth is injustice!

4th Arrest in Tennessee Couple's Slaying

Jan 12 2007 By DUNCAN MANSFIELD Associated Press Writer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A fourth person was arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a young man, whose burned corpse was found dumped along railroad tracks, and the death of his date, who was kept alive for days and raped, authorities said. All four suspects were being held on federal charges, Knoxville police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Two were arrested in Knoxville and the other two in Lebanon, Ky. The victims, Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, a 21-year- old University of Tennessee student, were last seen Saturday night while on a date.

The two had been at a friend's apartment and had left to get something to eat, with the plan of then going to another friend's home to watch movies. They never arrived. Newsom's body was found the next day. He had been shot and his body set on fire along a rail line, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Rich Knighten said. His girlfriend's vehicle was found nearby. "The second victim, they kept her for a couple of days and brutally raped and sexually assaulted her," Knighten told The Associated Press in an interview from Louisville. "Then they killed her and dumped her body."

The suspects were arrested Thursday and Friday. Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, arrested in Knoxville Thursday night, was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking, DeBusk said. Lemaricus Davidson, 25, arrested at an empty house in Knoxville the same day, was charged with federal counts of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a crime of violence, DeBusk said. Davidson had been released in August from a Tennessee prison after serving five years for carjacking and aggravated robbery. The other two suspects—George Geovonni Thomas, 27, and Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24—were arrested during in a raid on a house in Lebanon, Ky., about 180 miles north of Knoxville.

Thomas was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking and Cobbins was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, DeBusk said. Court papers said Cobbins' fingerprints were found on a firearm magazine containing two rounds of 9mm ammunition. He had been convicted in 2003 in New York state of third-degree attempted robbery. Thomas and Cobbins were to appear before a federal magistrate in Louisville late Friday. Authorities declined to release further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

The victims' families asked for privacy. "The Newsom family has suffered a tremendous and tragic loss because of the apparent murder of their beloved son, Chris," Newsom family attorney James A.H. Bell said. The Christian family thanking the community "for all their prayers and everything that has been done during this time." "We have lost someone who was very beautiful and loving," the family said in a statement. "We are grateful for the outpouring of help that this community has given us and would not be able to get through this without you."

UPDATE: Search warrant reveals disturbing details in fatal carjacking

New records show another woman saw a UT student after she was carjacked, but before she was murdered earlier this month. More details about the deaths of Channon Christian and her boyfriend Chris Newsom were revealed in documents filed in Knox County Sessions court this week. According to a search warrant executed January 24, police have talked with a fifth person who says she witnessed Christian being held.

According to that search warrant, a woman saw Christian alive at the Chipman Street house, and her account of what she saw helped officers target specific evidence. The warrant explains "she witnessed the victim's mouth being cleansed with some type of spray bottle of cleaning supply contained within the residence." On Wednesday, police went back to the house where Christian's body was found inside a garbage can. Records show police seized a spray bottle, empty garbage bags, carpet samples, and the lint trap from a dryer.

The search warrant explained the "Knox County Medical Examiner opined that fibers consistent with the carpet were found in victim Christian's hair." The warrant also said "the woman also witnessed clothing stained of blood and smelling like gasoline being placed in the washing machine of the residence." The medical examiner found Newsom's body had been bound and physically assaulted, then burned using some sort of accelerant.

Meanwhile, Letalvis Cobbins and George Thomas, who were arrested in Kentucky following the deadly carjacking, appeared in a Knoxville courtroom for the first time Thursday. Both the victims' families were in court again, leaning on each other and exchanging hugs. Both Cobbins and Thomas pleaded not guilty, were appointed defense attorneys and waived their rights to request bond. They will remain in jail along with Cobbin's brother Lemaricus Davidson and Eric Boyd. Cobbins and Davidson could face the death penalty if convicted. Thomas could spend more than seven years in prison, if convicted of helping Cobbins and Davidson evade arrest after the carjacking.
