We don't know too much about the two witnesses. They are described as being the two olive trees and the two lampstands. This suggests that they will be spiritual Christian leaders who will bring a powerful message of peace and authority, the gospel of Jesus Christ. They and their message will be IMMENSELY unpopular, so much so that the entire world will celebrate their deaths. The entire world did not celebrate the deaths of Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin or Pol Pot. This indicates that the two witnesses who "tormented those who dwell on the Earth", will be even more notorious than the previously named modern-day tyrants. Since we know that they are sent by God as prophets, the indication is that at this time the world is totally against the Almighty God. This is not the present day, but a future time when the world will not bear to hear the testimony of Jesus Christ. That situation exists already in Moslem countries and may indicate a time when Islam (a Satanic cult) has conquered Europe. This could happen within a generation or two.
