Democracy about dead in America?

John Adams, our second President, warned:

“Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”

I'm a collateral descendant of John Adams, happy to say (even though I had nothing to do with it).
