"I [Lord G-d of Israel] will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of you, I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; together I will make them as sheep in a fold, as a flock within its stall shall they stir with people. Fourth (and Final) "Thousand" Year Reich:

For the first time in a thousand years a German Pope sits on his throne in Rome.
A German-led Europe will soon mutate, like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, into a restored Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Their Concordat renewed, a rapidly re-Nazifying Berlin and re-paganizing Rome will march on Jerusalem for their Last Crusade. They will attempt to seize Jerusalem from the Jews and there crown the new king of a final world empire on Mount Zion at the Benedictine Basilica of the Dormition (Dormition Abbey), constructed as an exact copy of Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) Cathedral built by Charles the Great (Charlemagne) 1,200 years ago.

"...Spanish 'imperialism' was the heir and rival, friend and foe of the Holy Roman Empire. Both empires, the Spanish and the Holy Roman, are commemorated in the dollar and 'dollar imperialism' of our own day. The dollar is the nominal descendant of the Joachimstaler (for centuries the currency of the Empire). The two vertical strokes and wavy band of the dollar sign -- to many a sacred symbol indeed -- first adorned, as the emblem of the Spanish monarchy, taler made from South American silver. The strokes stand for the Pillars of Hercules, which together with a legend-bearing scroll (the wavy band) made up the sacral-political device of Charles V and his empire. (page 2)

"Behind the Spanish and Holy Roman empires lies yet 'another' imperium, whose device is the celebrated line from Virgil's Fourth Eclogue foretelling the rebirth of the Golden Age, a prophecy which medieval men took to refer to Christ. It is Virgil, as the first poet-prophet of the Roman Empire who conducts Dante, poet-prophet of the medieval Holy Roman Empire through Hell and Purgatory to the threshold of Paradise. Dante's paradise has its roots in the palace garden of the Persian king, in the primal age of world monarchy, and the same can in a sense be said of the gardens of Versailles and Schoenbrunn. 'Emperor's yellow', in Peking and Vienna alike the imperial colour and reserved strictly for use on imperial buildings, is yet another reminder that the Holy Roman Empire and its successor, the Austrian imperial monarchy, belonged to an order which had endured for five thousand years.(page 2)

"In 1958 Prince Karl Schwarzenberg, whose forebears were numbered among the princes of the Empire, published a study (Adler und Drache) in which he traces out the symbols of this five-thousand-year order. The concluding sentence runs: 'Five thousand years measure the flight path of the imperial eagle as he makes his way from the temple towers of Eridu [in ancient Sumer] towards the setting sun and the evening mists veiling the future of the atomic age'. The post-Copernican era was launched with the first space rockets. In the not so distant future the new Columbus, homo cosmonautus, may be planting pockets of himself and his life-style in some galaxy, just as his forebears once planted colonies first round the Mediterranean and later in the two Americas. This open cosmos presents man with a challenge he finds hard to bear. (pages 2-3)

"The conception of the Holy Roman Empire as a unique barrier against the coming of antichrist still had a place in the thought of Bellarmine, one of the most important papal theorizers of the early modern period; more significant still, it is also implicit in the thought of constitutional philosophers and theorists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. (page 3)

"The idea that while the Holy Roman Empire still existed -- in one of its metamorphoses if not in its own person -- the end of the world and the Last Judgment would be postponed was the great theme of the medieval theologians of the Holy Roman Empire and of its poets and literary champions at critical moments in its history. This conviction concealed within itself the realization that the Holy Roman Empire was the last manifestation of an age-old sacral-political order in which 'gods', mean, beasts, all living things, dwelt together under the protection of one or more great houses. The houses were those of the world emperors, rulers whose insignia, down to the end of the Holy Roman Empire, continued to be those proper to the Emperor of the Heavens. The imperial eagle was a battle standard in the time of the earliest Mesopotamian kings and afterwards among the Sumerians; it went into battle with the Roman legions and the troops of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, just as in the battles of the First World War it accompanied the armies both of His Apostolic Majesty the Emperor of Austria and of the Tsar of All the Russias. The double eagle, officially incorporated into the arms of the Empire in the fifteenth century in the reign of Sigismund, is first found in Mesopotamia. Our seven-day week is a sacred division of time presided over by the seven Chaldean planetary deities, and we inhabit holy places made safe by the tutelary powers of the old gods and their earthly representatives. "The Holy Roman Empire, under constant threat of corruption and collapse (the desidia of the Hohenstaufen documents), again and again found itself in need of protection and rebirth, renovatio. Hence the programmatic names assumed by so many emperor-kings, names which invoke saviour forebears whom their descendants hope to reincarnate. Assyrian, Babylonian and Egyptian rulers had all used programmatic names, some of them quite revolutionary in character, like that of Pharoah Amenophis IV (1383-1365 B.C.E.). He called himself Echn Aton, 'ray of the sun', and composed a hymn to the sun which is taken up word for word in Psalm 104. Without knowing it, many christian households still recite the prayer of this sun ruler -- 'all eyes wait upon You, O Lord...' as a grace before meals.(page 4)

The contest ended in 1250 with the collapse of the old Empire. This was followed, half a century later, by the 'Babylonian captivity of the church', that is to say, the removal of the papacy to Avignon, where it was under the thumb of the French king.(page 4)

"Ostentation, extravagance and pomp are inseparable from imperial celebrations and ceremony, whether in Augustan Rome, Byzantium or Vienna. We shall understand more clearly why this should be so when we appreciate that their underlying purpose was to replenish the sun-given splendour and power of the Holy Empire, which seemed perpetually threatened by decay and its hosts of enemies. The nimbus which encircles the emperor in Byzantine and early medieval portraits is the aura, Hvarna, the heavenly blaze of triumph emanating from the light and might of the sun which plays about the head of the Persian king. The sign of the cross, which carried Constantine, founder of both Empire and Papacy, as christian world powers, to victory at the Milvian bridge, already hangs from the neck of the Assyrian king: to him it symbolized the sun and four corners of the world, and he wore it as a sign of strength and salvation. Lordship of the world meant lordship extending over the four quarters of the heavens.(page 4)

"The time is December 1916 [RB Editor: 90 years ago, 1916-2006], the scene Budapest, whither Charles I of Austria has come for his coronation as king of Hungary. (On the same day a negative answer was received from the allies to the peace feelers put out by Austria-Hungary and Germany). Charles is crowned with the sacred crown of St. Stephen (part Byzantine, part papal in origin and on a par with the imperial crown) and invested with St. Stephen's sword. He swears the oath for his kingdom of Hungary. The paladins proffer him the ancient sword of the Holy Roman Empire, the imperial sword of St. Maurice, which was probably made for Emperor Henry III. Inscribed on one face of the hilt is the ancient victory song to Christ once chanted in the Laudes which followed imperial coronations: Christus vincit -- Chistus regnat -- Christus imperat. The next ceremony is at the Sankt-Georgs Platz, where a mound has been made of earth sent in chestfuls from every county in Hungary (the orb of the Holy Roman Empire is said to contain earth from the four quarters of the globe). As befits the king of a nation of horsemen -- once Asiatic, now steeped in European tradition -- Charles rides up the mound and from the summit brandishes the sword to all four points of the compass in symbolic reference to the Magyar claim to world domination. (pages 4-5)

"Charles I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, was the last to bear the saving name of Charles the Great which had been invoked by so many 'renovators' of the Holy Roman Empire, from the Ottonian emperors to the Hohenstaufen, from Maximilian I to Napoleon. Charles is a name as programmatic as Belshazzar, the name of the last king of Babylon, which means 'may God protect the king'. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries God was no longer protecting the emperors and kings of the old empires. The last couplet of Heine's famous poem Belsazar was found scratched on the wall of the cellar in which the Tsar's family was shot. As recently as 1881, the Egyptian populace had broken spontaneously into the age-old lament for the dead when the royal mummies were brought from Cairo after their three thousand years of seclusion in the Valley of the Kings. Earlier in the century Heine noted in his Reisebilder a little incident which had occurred in Mexico. Bullock had dug up an ancient stone image dating from heathen times; next morning he found it wreathed in flowers. 'And this', says Heine, 'after the Spanish had destroyed the old religion of the Mexicans with fire and sword and spent three centuries going over their souls, ploughing them up and sowing the seeds of Christianity'. Today it is the image of the emperors that lie in ruins. Historians tend to be prophets after the event (and nowadays sometimes even before it) but they have no means of knowing what power order will assume in the psyche of the nations the role occupied for the past five thousand years by the great households of the sacred empires. Will there be an 'Emperor of America' (apart from the one envisaged by George Bernard Shaw)? Or perhaps an Emperor Atom? International conferences of the United Nations Commission on Atomic Energy take place at the Hofburg in Vienna, only a few paces from the resting place of the imperial crown. In 1938 Hitler had the crown taken from Vienna to Nuremberg, where it was no stranger, having been kept there from 1424 until 1796. Kennedy, Krushchev, the Shah of Persia, many potentates, leading statesmen, presidents, pretenders to thrones and dictators have stood in our day in the presence of the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire. "Primitive forms of the imperial insignia are to be found in the Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian empires. The crown represents the heaven hat of the King of the Heavens. Sceptre, orb, sword and star-strewn mantle represent the claim to rule the cosmos. The vestments are the vestments of a high priest, the thrones triumphal chariots. The designs for trionfi made by Duerer and other German masters of the Renaissance for Maximilian I, (the grandes entrees in honour of Charles V, hark back to the ceremonious parading of divine effigies of the god-king in the holy and universal empires which preceded the Holy Roman Empire. In solemn processions the Emperor rides beneath a canopy representing the sky, in other words Heaven. Whether in Babylon or in the Vienna of Francis Joseph, the ruler has a sacred ritual or prayer and liturgical observance to perform. (How greatly things changed with the triumph of the papacy is shown by the fact that the place under the canopy in the Corpus Christi procession was thenceforth reserved for the 'All Holiest' [POPE], borne by priests, the [Holy Roman] Emperor being left to walk behind). The Emperor ploughs, hunts, makes war, honours his sacred forebears. The Holy Empire is a feasting, celebrating community, in which banquets, festivals, war, 'war dramas', mock battles and the chase are bound inextricably together. We shall find this significant constellation recurring throughout the thousand years of the Holy Roman Empire's history. Francis Joseph, the last emperor of ancient lineage, was as much of a Nimrod as NIMROD himself. (pages 5-6)

"The birthday of Emperor Francis Joseph fell on 18 August, a day of 'sky-blue imperial weather'. The popular belief that prosperous harvests, good weather, cosmic harmony on earth, are dependent on the ruler came as naturally to the Irish and Anglo-Saxon monks and other intellectuals who frequented the Carolingian court as it did to the ancient empires of the Euphrates and the Nile and to the 'Blacks and Yellows' (imperial loyalists) of the Danube monarchy. The ruter was the guarantee that these benefits would continue, the guarantee of the great peace.(page six).

"The peace had to be cosmic, embracing both the heavens and the earth. On earth the peace-giving function of the Emperor of the Heavens was exercised by the emperor ordained by God. The Empire was a federation of peoples led by the Emperor, a federation in which concordia provinciarum, harmony between the members, prevails. The charters of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire invoke the One and Undivided Trinity and promise peace 'to the faithful of God and to the Empire', employing a sacral formula which goes back to ancient Roman and pre-Roman times. At the Versailles Peace Conference the Portuguese delegate (a professor of the ancient university of Coimbra), proposed without success that the treaties which were supposed to end the First World War (but failed to do so) should open with an invocation to the Trinity.(page six)

In his own interpretations of his office, the Emperor was the supreme defender and protector of the church. Here was intractable material for conflict. Exactly how was the Emperor to exercise this protectorate over the church? Did it also give him rights, albeit regarded initially as purely 'temporal' rights, over the Pope and his possessions? What should be the Pope's reaction to this exalted and high dangerous patronage? What gave the Holy Roman Empire its title? Did it derive from Aeneas, from that pius Aeneas in whose honour Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who had been secretary to Emperor Frederick III, called himself Pius upon becoming pope? Did it derive from Caesar? From Augustus, creator of peace and order in the Augustan age, whom the Middle Ages honoured because he prepared the way for the Pax Christi? Did it derive from Christ himself, who had conferred the temporal sword on the Emperor and the spiritual sword on the Pope, for the governance of Christendom? From St. Peter? From the papacy?(pages six-seven)

"Charles the Great [Charlemagne], regarded by all emperors of the Holy Roman Empire as their illustrious forebear, took the title not of 'Roman Emperor' but of 'Emperor ruling the Roman Empire'. We have Einhard's word for it that the 'Roman emperors' would have been greatly displeased by the establishment of a second imperial office through Charles' coronation on Christmas day 800. The Roman emperors in question were purple-born emperors, enthroned in the 'second Rome', the Golden City on the Golden Horn, in other words Constantinople. The problem whether there could be two emperors would vex the minds of many future statesmen of the west. (page seven)

"The issue of the official Vienna gazette for 15 August 1804 contains a patent published in the name of the fifty-fifth christian Roman emperor, Francis II. Already 'Perpetual Enlarger of the Empire, King in Germany, Hungary, Bohemia, Galicia and Lodomeria, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy and Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany, etc.', this Roman emperor was now assuming for himself and his successors in the Habsburg hereditary dominions the additional title of Emperor of Austria. Earlier in the year, in May, Napoleon had been proclaimed 'Emperor of the French'. On 2 December, in the presence of the Pope, he crowned himself in Notre-Dame. On 7 December the Austrian imperial patent was solemnly proclaimed from the loggia of the church Am Hof in Vienna. A year later, on 2 December 1805, Napoleon inflicted a terrible defeat on the Austrian and Russian forces at Austerlitz. He could now proceed with the 'final' demolition of the old Empire. He prevailed on a number of German princes to come together in a Rhenish League, when then declared its secession from the Empire. Next Francis II was called on to divest himself of the imperial crown, in terms so threatening that he had no choice by to comply. He did so on 6 August 1806, and at the same time dissolved the 'Roman Empire', an act for which he had no legal justification.(page seven)

"In February 1806 Napoleon urged his uncle, Cardinal Flesch, to impress upon the church that 'I am indeed Charlemagne, the sword of the church and its emperor'.(pg.7)

"Paris has not forgotten the victories won by Napoleon; they are commemorated in monuments, in the names of streets and squares, even of underground stations. Paris, on a par with Rome, Madrid, Vienna and London, asserts the old claim of the French kings to be the true successors of Charles the Great. The 'true Franks' are not the 'German Franks' but the French. German princes became Franks in virtue of their coronation in Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), Charles' seat, or in Frankfurt, Charles' city.(page seven-eight)

"The King of the Romans was 'Frankish' to the end (witness Goethe's account of the coronation of Joseph II in Frankfurt in 1764); the groundwork of the Holy Roman Empire was Carolingian. 'Frankish' and 'Roman' and 'Christian' came to mean 'Roman Catholic'.(page eight)

"In the Carolingian Empire forty-two noble families (at least nineteen of them related to the royal house) occupied the most important positions in the imperial administration. It is common for anyone who wants to count for anything in Europe to trace his ancestry back to Charles the Great. John Foster Dulles, credited by his friends and detractors with sharing 'Carolingian' Adenauer's ambition to revive Carolingian Europe, set about it with the help of professional genealogists.(page fourteen)

"A royal citadel: Charles' nimbus, his saving strength, his 'prestige', rested from start to finish on the fact that he was king of the Franks, the people beloved and chosen by Christ. In Europe, as in all ages whenever sacral royal power has developed (the last kings of the old type are at present dying out in Africa), monarchy has its roots in archaic, magical depths. At bottom, the king is a magus (the kings of ancient Egypt wear an imitation lion's tail, like the master magicians in prehistoric cliff and cave drawings). He is 'god' on earth, high priest (like Melchizedek). He bears the power and attributes of divinity, of priests, of magicians. The Carolingians, with the help of the Pope, had deposed, desacralized, the Merovingians, who, vested with the magic of their flowing sacred locks, had once progressed on their sacred ox-wagon through the lands of saints related to their dynasty. The inheritor of their saving strength was Charles, and after him the French kings (in the nineteenth century restoration period, royalist supporters still expected the kings to touch for 'king's evil' -- scrofula).(page fifteen)

"The imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire has remained since 1800 in Vienna, a dazzling memorial and witness to the Empire's majesty. It was probably made for the coronation of Otto the Great in 962. From that day forward, although the Empire was at no time a German national state, Germany was to be its chief prop and stay.(pg.22)

"The late medieval dances of death show Death, the Emperor's greatest enemy, snatching him away. Respect for death, preparation for death, contemplation of death, celebration of death in the solemnities of funeral procession, burial and funerary monument, informed the lives, work, thoughts and feelings of Habsburg rulers from Maximilian I to Maria Theresa. Some might say that the Habsburg burial place, the vault of the Capuchins in Vienna is one of the places where the memory of the old Empire is kept most green.(page twenty three)

"Henry I [Duke of the Saxons] acquired from Rudolf of Burgundy an object which became the victory-bringing sacred symbol of the Saxon Ottonian Empire and was revered for the next thousand years as one of the holiest of the imperial insignia. This was the Holy Lance whose trail leads back from Burgundy into the Lombard kingdom and from Italy back again to Jerusalem (later it was identified as the spear Longinus thrust into the side of the crucified Jesus. His possession of the lance places Henry, the Saxon duke who strove to prove his sacrel kingship in the only admissible manner, by victory on the field of battle, directly in line with his son Otto the Great, who as emperor would wear the star-strewn mantle and the tunic fringed with tintinnabula. Tunic and mantle formed part of the vestments of the biblical high priest. And it was the high priest who wore the hoshen, the breastplate set with twelve precious stones whose names were the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. The crown of the Empire incorporates two such groups of twelve stones, on the front and on the neck-plate; one or other must surely have been intended to perpetuate the symbolism of the hoshen. The Ottonian Emperor is representative of the high priest, of Christ the Priest King, who succeeded the kings of God's ancient people. Four potent saviour figures -- Solomon, David, Isaiah confronting King Hezekiah in his sickness, and Christ the ruler of all -- occupy the four intermediate plates of the crown, summoning the Emperor to his bounden duty. Keeping faith with Christ the King and his own sacred ancestors, supported on earth by his true 'friends' -- in other words by princes, dukes, kings, popes and bishops -- the Emperor is to lead God's people to war and victory. The splendour and frailty of the Ottonian conception of empire already stand revealed. What could be finer, what more right and proper, than a Holy Empire conceived as a great federative league, based on trust rather than subjection, composed of friends from within and without (at their head the Pope, both as bishop of Rome and king's friend), the whole under the leadership of the Emperor-king?

"Otto was chosen king by the Franks and the Saxons; the formal ceremony of election by all five tribal duchies and the consecration and enthronement took place at Aachen on 7 August 936. Aachen was the imperial city of Charles the Great, 'Otto's exemplar from the day he began to rule'.(page twenty six)

"The election was in two parts, the ecclesiastical and lay princes acting separately by their own wish. The lay princes set Otto (who had donned Frankish clothing -- in becoming king the Saxon became a Frank) on a throne in the cathedral forecourt and pledged him loyalty and support against his enemies. THE PEOPLE RAISED THEIR RIGHT HANDS TO SHOW THEIR ASSENT IN THE ELECTION AND SHOUTED 'VICTORY AND SALVATION' (Sieg und Heil), a salutation of substance in that it gave the election legal force. The title of consecration (which had been administered only seven weeks previously to the Carolingian king in France) was presided over by Heriger of Mainz who had emerged the victor from a dispute with the other archbishops, Cologne and Trier, over which of the three should take precedence. Standing before the altar he handed the king the sword with which to fight the enemies of Christ, the mantle in token of a faith kept burning until death, the sceptre and staff with which to chastise his subjects and protect the weak. Then the archbishops of Mainz and Cologne anointed and crowned the king. The sacred rite was brought to its culmination and conclusion by two deeply archaic ruler-cult rituals: enthronement on Charles' seat, 'from which he could see all and by all be seen', and a royal banquet in the palace, at which the four dukes did the honours, Gilbert of Lotharingia as chamberlain, Eberhard of Franconia as steward, Hermann of Swabia as butler and Arnulf of Bavaria as marshal. An impressive picture of 'German' unity: people and princes shoulder to shoulder beside their king.

"THIS IS THE PLACE TO SPEAK OF THE PECULIARLY GERMAN FAITH IN POWER. Fundamentally, it is a faith rooted in mistrust of the 'wicked world', a world full of devilish enemies (the Devil himself is the alt boese viant, the old arch enemy), a world of discord and unrest, in which feud, war, perjury and murder are masters. Lamentations over the perfidy of this world assail our ears from the tenth century down to our own day. THIS FEELING THAT THE WORLD IS PAST HOPE HAS TENDED TO DRIVE THE GERMANS TO SUCCUMB TO ONE OF TWO TEMPTATIONS. The first is a despairing Manichaeism: the world is split to the core between the friends of God, who are few, and the minions of the Devil, who are many; the only way to break out of the 'situation' (laga, in Old German an ambush from which all exits lead to death) is through a prayer born of sheer desperation -- with our without action. Hence people are 'pessimists' or 'optimists', those who pray or those who act. The other temptation is to succumb to what is at bottom a no less despairing Pelagianism: man is free, completely exposed to all winds and weathers; he can assert himself only through mastering the material world including -- terrifying thought -- its human material.(page thirty two)

"German historians seized the opportunity offered by 1962, the thousandth anniversary of the Holy Roman Empire (designated 'Roman' under Otto II, 'Holy' under Frederick I in the twelfth century, 'of the German Nation' in the early fifteenth century), to ventilate the problems attaching to its foundation. DID IT IMPLY A CLAIM TO WORLD DOMINATION? Or was 'dominium mundi' merely a 'literary flourish''(Tellenbach)?

"In the Holy Roman Empire Jews were protected by letters of privilege and the laws of the Empire, by emperors, imperial bishops and individual princes; during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Jews fled from the pogroms of Russian Poland and Tsarist Russia to the protective regime of the Emperor in Vienna. The Babenbergs, like the Habsburgs after them, early attracted notoriety and suspicion on account of their 'friendship towards the Jews'. The Rhenish towns (for example, Trier, where Karl Marx grew up) had probably been centres of Jewish settlement from late Roman times; here in particular lived a German Jewry whose outlook was conservative in the extreme and remained so to the bitter end. Conservatives in their theology, these Jews were also conservative in their faith in the Empire, a faith which they transferred in due course from the old Holy Roman Empire to Bismark's Germany and to the Emperor in Vienna; in fact they evolved Empire-loyalties of their own, which in the Kaiser's Germany made victims in their own fashion of men like Ballin and Rathenau. Jews 'atoned' in Hitler's extermination camps for their unshakeable trust in the Reich (which was Reich [empire] no longer) and in German justness. In former centuries they had died in front of those imperial cathedrals which continued until 1944-5 to stand on their Ottonian foundations, having withstood the conflagrations of a millennium. When 'holy Cologne' and its triconch churches went up in flames, when ancient Hildesheim, the creation of two Ottonian bishops, Bernward and Godehard, was collapsing under a hail of bombs in February and March 1945, German Jewry, whose financial power for centuries was a mainstay of emperors, kings and German princes (Jews were the 'managers' of their courts), whose contribution in the nineteenth and early twentieth century enriched German science, culture and art, itself already was annihilated, reduced to ashes.(pages 42-43)

"The Hohenstaufen era had begun, and with it the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation....The vision of this empire -- the Empire -- harboured by a German nationalist-liberal and conservative bourgeoisie and lovingly encouraged by historians and poets, sees it set in a Middle Ages transfigured by romanticism. This is the empire of Kaiser Rotbart, Frederick Barbarossa, the one empire which was a fusion of power and spirit, a combination of political importance on a world scale with an independent German knightly civilization whose influence radiated out from the heart of Europe. This empire was what men would later term a 'power order' and its emperor was the ruler of all christian peoples. BARBAROSSA DIED ON CRUSADE. BUT THE OLD EMPEROR OF THE OLD AND GLORIOUS EMPIRE DID NOT DIE: HE SLEEPS IN KYFFHAEUSER, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, AND WHEN GERMANY REAWAKENS WILL RETURN. The collapse of Kaiser Wilhelm's 'empire' was followed in conservative German Protestant and Catholic circles by a revival of a religious-political form of empire romanticism (the Kyffhaeuser Bund). The period after the Second World War saw performances in south Germany of the Ludus de Antichristo, a mid-twelfth-century play which exalts the Emperor as the sole shield against antichrist, the sole protection against an envious, wicked East and a jealous West.(pages sixty seven -- sixty eight)
