Mugabe faces showdown with his party as violence grows
Robert Mugabe’s position as President of Zimbabwe is looking increasingly uncertain following the reaction to a recent wave of violence meted out by the regime against opponents.
The ruling Zanu-PF party's politburo will decide today if it will back Mugabe as their candidate for next year's presidential election. Senior figures, such as former army chief Solomon Mujuru may challenge Mugabe as economic collapse, sanctions and international isolation threaten both their business interests and political base. Western diplomats are working towards a deal that would see a senior Zanu-PF figure temporarily taking on the presidency, paving the way to the lifting of sanctions and delivering aid to relieve economic meltdown and impending famine.
